Pet Urns

Pet Urns

Pet Urns: Pets possess an amazing ability to love us when we are alone, stressed or feel otherwise unlovable; that's why losing them is so difficult. And while the pain of losing a pet may be just as intense as that of losing a person, it is difficult for those who are not pet lovers to understand. However, with the passage of time, some good resources and closure, the pain will eventually lessen.

One popular step towards gaining closure surrounding the loss of a pet is to create a memorial for him or her that allows you to have your companion close by. Many people chose to do this by finding a cremation urn specifically for pets as it allows them to both memorialize and keep their longtime pal close by.

Pet urns, just like urns for people, come in many shapes, sizes and styles. And because there are so many urns to choose from, the decision may be made less overwhelming by thinking about the way in which you would like to have your pet remembered.

Would you prefer a pet urn that can be worn as jewelry or something that may be displayed at home? Do you want something that is formal, something that is artsy, or something that is animal-specific? And would like to incorporate a photo of your furry friend into the memorial? These are all great questions to ask yourself as you begin your search for the perfect urn for your pet.

Some of our suggestions for pet memorials include the following:

  • If you would like for your pet to be close to you at all times, you might consider pet memorial jewelry. Pet urn jewelry typically includes a pendant (known as an urn pendant) that holds a small portion of your pet's cremated remains.
  • If you would like an urn that showcases your pet, consider a beautiful wooden urn that has a special picture frame for your faithful friend's photo.
  • If you would like to capture your pet's personality, consider a custom ceramic art urn. Artists who create these urns work with pet owners to deliver stunning urns that are full of personality.
  • For a more traditional look, consider a ceramic urn. Ceramic urns come in several shapes and sizes and often come with beautiful artwork.

What Size to Purchase?

Pet cremation urns come in several different sizes. As a standard rule of thumb you should allow one cubic inch of space for every pound of pre-death body weight. For most small to medium size pets you might consider a keepsake urn. However, for larger animals, you may need to go up to a larger "single" size or even a "companion" size. For extra large animals including equine, you should contact a custom urn artist.

Mixing Ashes

It is not uncommon for pet owners to wish to have their ashes co-mingled with those of their beloved pet. This may be done in one of two ways. The most popular method is to purchase a keepsake or single urn in honor of your pet so that you may always have a beautiful memorial to view. Then, when the time comes, you may make your wishes known and ultimately share a larger companion urn with your pet. The second option is to estimate the size of the urn that will be needed for both the pet and the owner yourself and to purchase it when the first need arises and add to it in the future.

If you have lost a beloved pet then please know that your pain is real and is just as important as the pain others feel when they have lost a human. And while purchasing the perfect cremation urn for your pet will not ease the pain, it may help offer a small piece of closure that you need.
